U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona Visits Casey Elementary

United States Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona visited Casey Elementary on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, for a roundtable discussion with JPS community partners on how the American Rescue Plan is impacting public schools. He also toured the building, visited a number of classrooms, and gladly participated in an art project, demonstrating his commitment to hands-on learning experiences.

"What I saw walking around the hallways, every student told me this is an arts-based program, or we use the arts, and you can tell the students were really engaged,” said Secretary Cardona. “Part of the reason why we’re visiting is we’re highlighting the great work of using the American Rescue Plan dollars to give students additional support. When these dollars were made available to help rescue what we know our students lost during the pandemic, there are some examples that really shine brighter than others and this is one of them."

Executive Director of Innovative Strategy Dr. Samecia Stokes and representatives from the District’s afterschool programs, including the Greater Jackson Arts Council, the Mississippi Children’s Museum, and Bean Path discussed with Cardona and State Superintendent of Education Robert Taylor the programming they have created via federal pandemic relief funding.

Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Michael Cormack Jr., Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Grigsby, and Casey Principal Anthony Moore along with other school and district officials welcomed Secretary Cardona to Casey and accompanied him on his tour and attended the panel discussion.
Secretary Cardona’s visit to Casey Elementary School shined a positive light on Jackson Public Schools and the importance of providing all JPS Scholars with opportunities to succeed.
